Laguna is one of the fourteen states of Almarania, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is bordered by a Barbarian territory to the east, by Porojna to the west, by the Nuran Sea to the north and by Upper Almarania to the south. The state is named after the Mintavian Lagoon, which is the most prominent feature on its coastine. Its capital and largest city, as well as its main industrial, cultural and political center, is Tihum, with 1,629,850 inhabitants (2011), located west of the Cape Canaveral peninsula, on the Tihum Bay. It is also the biggest Almaranian port on the Nuran Sea and the second biggest one overall, after Sylvestria.
Laguna's coastline has traditionally been a center of lively maritime trade. South of it lies the Nuran Sea Plain, a rich agricultural region famed for its production of cereals, fruits and vegetables. The Miller Mountains in the far south are rich in copper and zinc-lead ores and thus metal production has for a long time been the most important sector of Laguna's industry. Since the 1990s, though, the coastline has become a powerful center of IT technology and innovation. As of 2013, Laguna is the fourth richest state/city with special status in Almarania, with a per capita GDP of $51,212. It is also the richest state in the northern part of the country.
Laguna is home to the Varadinovgrad University, the oldest university in Almarania, established in 1375.
