The license plate is rectangular in shape and made of [[Wikipedia:Aluminium|aluminium]]. There is a white vertical stripe on the left side of the plate displaying the Sun of Amadora and the country code of San Remo (SR). For private vehicles the white stripe is followed, in white characters on a green background, by a combination of two digits, a combination of two letters and a combination of 4 digits. On all vehicles two plates have to be present, one in front and the other in rear, except motorcycles and tractors.

The white stripe was introduced in 1996. Modification of the white stripe is not in accordance with the law, but vehicle registration plates issued before January 1996 and thus without the white stripe are still valid.
