There was a letter, written in Latin, delivered with the flag, saying (English translation): For our king Ferdinand II, member of the Royal family who kept us together during difficult times. King Ferdinand II found the flag so beautiful that he decided to design a new flag, based on the flag he received, for the Republic of San Remo. The newly formed government chose the flag of Ferdinand II as the flag of the republic and the design and the symbolism of the new flag were defined in the new constitution of 1890.
The official name of the flag is Flag of the Republic of San Remo, but the flag is usually called Oro, verde y blanco (Gold, green and white) by the citizens. The new flag became very popular, but also the old tricolour flag was still used alongside the new flag for a couple of years.

There has been a lot of speculation about the identity of the mysterious Gabriel. However, his identity remains unknown to this day. King Ferdinand II named the new flag of the republic after this Gabriel, "The flag of Gabriel".

The national flag of San Remo (Spanish: Bandera de San Remo; Portuguese: Bandeira de Sanremo) has a field of nine equal horizontal stripes, alternating yellow and green, and a white triangle at the hoist with a symbol of the Sun of Amadora. The sun has 16 straight and 16 waved sunbeams. The flag proportions (width:length) are 2:3.

Symbolism and design

A law defined the colours of the flag as Brilliant gold, Moderate malachite green and Light gray. The colours of the Sun of Amadora are defined as Vivid yellow and Strong orange. The exact matches are as follows:

Scheme Brilliant gold Moderate malachite green Light gray Vivid yellow Strong orange
CMYK 0.13.96.2 81.0.58.31 0.0.0.1 0.0.100.3 0.52.100.23

The colours of the flag were intended to symbolize the following: the yellow colour is the national colour and stands for the sun, but also for optimism and pleasure, the green stands for hope and the white stands for a new beginning.

The yellow stripes also symbolize the original 5 Spanish speaking departments, while the green stripes symbolize the original 4 Portuguese speaking departments of the Kingdom of San Remo. The white triangle is a symbol of the unity between the Spanish and the Portuguese part of the country. The symbol of the Sun of Amadora is an old Amadoran symbol that represents the origins of the country (the former Kingdom of Amadora and the city of Sanremo have played an important role in the history of San Remo).

History

When king Ferdinand II decided to abdicate the throne in 1889, the idea came to replace the old yellow, orange, green tricolour flag of the Kingdom of San Remo for a new flag for the new republic.

The newly formed government decided that the new flag should reflect the history of the country. Different designs were made and the final design was officially adopted on 17 February 1890. The design and the symbolism of the new flag are defined in the constitution of 1890.

The official name of the flag is Flag of the Republic of San Remo, but the flag is usually called Oro, verde y blanco (Gold, green and white) by the citizens. The new flag became very popular, but also the old tricolour flag was still used alongside the new flag for a couple of years.
