The national flag of San Remo (Spanish: Bandera de San Remo; Portuguese: Bandeira de Sanremo) has a field of nine equal horizontal stripes, alternating yellow and green, and a white triangle at the hoist with a symbol of the sun. The sun has 16 straight and 16 waved sunbeams. The flag proportions (width:length) are 2:3.
Symbolism and design
A law defined the colours of the flag as Brilliant gold, Moderate malachite green and Light gray. The colours of the symbol are defined as Vivid yellow and Strong orange. The exact matches are as follows:

The colours of the flag were intended to symbolize the following: the yellow colour is the national colour and stands for the sun, but also for optimism and pleasure, the green stands for hope and the white stands for a new beginning.
The yellow stripes also symbolize the Spanish speaking departments, while the green stripes symbolize the Portuguese speaking departments. The white triangle is a symbol for the unity between the Spanish and the Portuguese part of the country. The symbol of the sun is an old Amadoran symbol that represents the origins of the country (the former Kingdom of Amadora and the city of Sanremo have played an important role in the history of San Remo).
History
When king Ferdinand II decided to abdicate the throne in 1889, the original plan was to keep the old yellow, orange, green tricolour flag for the new republic.
The king received a lot of presents during the spring of 1889. On a day in May 1889, a lackey from the king found a present for Ferdinand II: a flag. The flag was delivered during the night or during the early morning at the castle in Rhea. There was a letter, written in Latin, delivered with the flag, saying (English translation): For our king Ferdinand II, member of the Royal family who kept us together during difficult times. The yellow stands for the sun that shines upon our heads, the green stands for hope and the white stands for a new beginning. May God be with you, may God be with us. Gabriel.
King Ferdinand II found the flag so beautiful that he proposed it as the new flag of the Republic of San Remo. The newly formed government chose the flag as the flag of the republic and the design and the symbolism of the new flag were defined in the new constitution of 1890.
There has been a lot of speculation about the identity of the mysterious Gabriel. However, it remains unknown to this day. The flag of the republic is named after Gabriel, "The flag of Gabriel".
