The National Bank of San Remo (Romi: Banco Nacional de Sanremo) is the central bank of San Remo and was established in August 1814. Its headquarters are located in the capital city of Rhea.
The role of the bank is to promote the economic and financial well-being of San Remo. The bank is responsible for the issue of the San Reman aleta and as such it sets the monetary policy, holds the currency reserves and manages the exchange rate.
History
The bank was established on 24 August 1814 by the National Bank of San Remo Act (Romi: Ley de Banco Nacional de Sanremo). The bank was founded as a body corporate that does not have shareholders and that is 'owned' by the San Reman government. The national bank was founded with a capital of 15 million dollar in gold, half provided by the government and half by national and foreign commercial banks.
Building
The head office of the National Bank of San Remo was located in the historical center of the capital city of Rhea. The old building is nowadays a historic monument that houses a museum and a library.
The contruction of a new building, designed in French Renaissance style, begun in 1938 in the business district of Rhea. The new building was inaugurated in April 1943.
Responsibilities
The main tasks of the National Bank of San Remo are the following:
- to act as a State Bank;
- to promote the economic and financial well-being of San Remo;
- to control the issue of banknotes and coins of the currency, the San Reman aleta;
- to manage the monetary policy of the country;
- to regulate the exchange rate between the aleta and other currencies and to supervise its observance;
- to manage the official reserves of San Remo.
