Kazmi (Arabic: الكاظمي, al-Kazmi) is the third largest city of Gandhara, located on the coast of the Nuran Sea in the country's southeast. With a population of 1,076,438 (2014 census), Kazmi serves as an important port and commercial center. It is situated in a subtropical zone and the area is rich in agricultural produce such as citrus fruit and tea. While industries of the city include shipbuilding, food processing, and light manufacturing, most of its economy revolves around tourism. Being a seaside resort, it is a popular tourist destination known for its warm weather.
Kazmi is a global city and a center for diplomacy due to the presence of the International Union for Telecommunication and several consulates.
History
Kazmi has been built on the ruines of an ancient Vedic civilisation. The earliest archaeological deposits recovered in the area are dated to ca. 1400 BCE, constituting a series of post holes in association with ceramic sherds and ash. During the Achaemenid period, an iron-working industry was developed in the area and the inhabitants used ceramics that are typical for this period at the western shore of the Nuran Sea.
Kazmi is first mentioned in an official document dating to 1010. In 1592, the city came under the rule of the Sultan of Gandhara. In the Gandhari Empire, Kazmi enjoyed a high degree of autonomy as city-state. This special status ended when the Al-Mansur dynasty was founded in 1878. Kazmi became a part of the Bazegha Governorate, becoming its capital in 1901.
During the Almaranian War of Liberation, Kazmi was shortly occupied by Almaranian forces. The city flourished during the second half of the 20th century, experiencing a rapid growth in population and becoming a popular tourist destination.
